Simon Says Wednesday: Use a Stencil

This spiral notebook had been near my work area for quite some time and I was not using it. This challenge got me thinking it would make a great garden notebook. To make the added on cover, I placed a smooched stencil laden with green water activated color burst on white layering weight cs. Once dry I sprinkled on vintage black embossing powder and heat set from the back. Next I stamped a sentiment in black and stamped the images in black on tissue paper. After I had colored the images with water colors I trimmed close then attached to piece by brushing clear gesso on the paper, placing tissue pieces where I wanted them and then adding a thin layer of clear gesso over everything. Once dry I stamped in versa mark the details of the dragon fly wings and heat embossed gold. Adhered the piece to the hard plastic original cover with Ultra Thick Gel Medium.

Tip: To keep the tissue paper flat while I painted and it dried, I use a cut down portion of my old used up cutting mat for the Silhouette. It has just a small amount of sticky left, is stiff and yet light weight. I used kitchen shears to trim it to a 7″x7″. This size fits on my work station without being too big or too small. I use one of these trimmed down mats in my Misti also. It holds small pieces that I am trying to stamp but too small for magnets.

    1. I somehow cut the birdhouse off the left side of the gate scene but I like it this way. Now I am thinking I need to do this with sentiment stamps. Easier to cut tissue down then cut stamps apart.

  4. I’m fascinated by your background and scene you created. Perfect for your garden journal. So how exactly did you create your stenciled background? Did you spray your paper, lay down the stencil then add colorburst??

  5. I sprinkle color burst on glass mat, spray with water and swirl to make sure beads of color are broken up. Lay stencil in liquid then lay that wet stencil on white cs. Remove right away by lifting straight up. So basically use the stencil like a stamp.

  6. If I didn’t know you had created this I would think it had been done by a professional printer. It is beautiful and I think your idea of using the sticky mat from your Silhouette for holding small pieces flat is genius. I have an old mat that I ruined when originally trying to learn my machine. Now I have a use for it. You truly have an amazing brain my friend.

    1. Oh Johanna, do not think for a moment that this is an original thought. I learned it once and took it to my craft room. Worked so well for me that I wanted to pass it along. I would give the person that taught me the tip credit but I don’t remember where I heard/read/saw it. It had to be over a year ago. One of the shortcomings of the internet.

  9. The lovely garden gate is perfect for a garden journal. The dragonfly is lovely. I like the idea of using the sticky mat in the MISTI to hold pieces too small for the magnets.
